Cinsault from the top of a hill in Bottelary, Stellenbosch, on old Malmesbury shale. The block was planted in the early 1990s, so it is at old-vine status now.
The shale is some of the oldest vineyard soil in the world, over 500 million years old. It is weathered into knuckle-sized clumps, rich in iron and aluminium, low in pH, with almost no topsoil. It is hard ground to grow on. From the hilltop there is a line of sight to the sea.
